What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical technique where operations inside the abdomen or pelvis are performed through small incisions using a camera (laparoscope) and thin instruments. This approach results in significantly less pain, faster recovery, reduced risk of infection, and better cosmetic outcomes compared to open surgery.

At Divine Health, our laparoscopic surgeons perform a full range of abdominal procedures with precision and safety using the latest 4K high-definition laparoscopic equipment.

Our Key Procedures

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Removal of the gallbladder through 3–4 tiny incisions. Most patients go home the same day and return to work in 5–7 days. Eliminates gallstone pain, bile duct stones, and risk of complications permanently.

Hernia Repair

TEP (Totally Extraperitoneal Repair): Preferred approach for inguinal hernia, placing mesh without entering the abdominal cavity. Minimal post-operative pain, return to work in 3–5 days.

IPOM Plus: Best approach for complex ventral and incisional hernias, using a composite mesh inside the abdomen.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — Laparoscopy

Clear answers to your questions about laparoscopy

What is the difference between laparoscopic and open surgery? +
Laparoscopic surgery uses 3–5 tiny incisions (5–12 mm) with a camera and long instruments. Open surgery uses a single large incision. Laparoscopic offers less pain, fewer complications, faster return to activity, and better cosmesis, but requires a skilled laparoscopic surgeon.
Is laparoscopic surgery safe? +
Yes. Laparoscopic surgery has an excellent safety record and is the preferred approach for most abdominal surgeries today. Complication rates are lower than open surgery. Our surgeons have performed thousands of laparoscopic procedures.
Can all abdominal surgeries be done laparoscopically? +
Most elective abdominal surgeries can be performed laparoscopically. However, emergency situations, severe adhesions, or complex anatomy may require conversion to open surgery. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate approach.
How long does gallbladder removal take? +
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy typically takes 45–60 minutes. Patients recover in the ward for 4–6 hours and most go home the same evening. Pain is usually well-controlled with oral medications.
Will I have dietary restrictions after gallbladder removal? +
For the first 1–2 weeks, a low-fat diet is recommended. Most people return to their normal diet within a month. A small percentage experience post-cholecystectomy diarrhoea, which usually resolves within 3–6 months.
Can hernia come back after laparoscopic repair? +
Hernia recurrence after laparoscopic mesh repair is less than 1–2% at 5 years — much lower than non-mesh repairs. Recurrence risk is higher in obese patients, chronic constipation, and heavy physical labour.
Is hernia surgery necessary even if there is no pain? +
Elective hernia repair is recommended even for asymptomatic inguinal hernias to prevent complications like incarceration (trapping) and strangulation (loss of blood supply), which are surgical emergencies. Small umbilical hernias may be observed.
What is anti-reflux surgery and who needs it? +
Nissen fundoplication wraps the upper stomach around the lower oesophagus to reinforce the anti-reflux mechanism. It is recommended for patients with confirmed GERD who do not respond adequately to proton pump inhibitors or do not want lifelong medication.
Does insurance cover laparoscopic surgery? +
Yes. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair, appendicectomy, and most laparoscopic procedures are covered by health insurance. Bariatric surgery coverage depends on the policy. Our billing team provides pre-authorization support.
When can I return to work after laparoscopic surgery? +
For desk jobs: 3–7 days after cholecystectomy or hernia repair. For physically demanding work: 2–4 weeks. Our surgeon provides specific guidance based on your procedure and type of work.
