Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat)

Clear answers to your questions about ent (ear, nose & throat)

When should I consider sinus surgery? +
Sinus surgery is considered when chronic sinusitis with or without polyps does not respond to 3–6 months of medical therapy including nasal steroids and antibiotics. A CT scan of the sinuses is done to confirm the anatomy before surgery.
Is FESS painful? +
FESS is performed under general anaesthesia. Post-operative discomfort includes nasal congestion, mild pressure, and light bleeding for 1–2 days. Most patients return to work in 5–7 days.
Can a deviated septum be fixed without surgery? +
Medical treatment can manage symptoms of deviated septum (decongestants, nasal steroids) but cannot correct the anatomical deviation. Surgery (septoplasty) is the only definitive treatment for a significantly deviated septum causing breathing difficulty.
What are the signs that tonsils need to be removed? +
Tonsillectomy is recommended when there are 7 or more tonsil infections in a year, or 5 per year for 2 consecutive years, or 3 per year for 3 years, peritonsillar abscess, or tonsil enlargement causing breathing/swallowing difficulties.
Can hearing loss be treated? +
Hearing loss depends on the cause. Conductive hearing loss (blocked ear canal, fluid, perforation) is often treatable with surgery or hearing aids. Sensorineural loss may require hearing aids or cochlear implants. Early diagnosis is critical.
What is BPPV and how is it treated? +
BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is the most common cause of vertigo, caused by displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear. It is treated with the Epley manoeuvre — a non-invasive head repositioning exercise performed by our ENT team in the clinic with immediate results.
Is snoring a medical concern? +
Loud, habitual snoring can indicate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) — a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, increasing risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. A sleep study diagnoses OSA. Treatment may include CPAP or surgical correction.
Does insurance cover ENT surgery? +
Yes. Most insurance policies cover ENT surgeries like FESS, tonsillectomy, septoplasty, tympanoplasty, and cochlear implants when medically indicated. Our team assists with pre-authorization documentation.
Can ear infections cause permanent hearing loss? +
Yes, untreated chronic ear infections and cholesteatoma can permanently damage the hearing bones (ossicles) and inner ear. Early treatment with tympanoplasty or ossiculoplasty can prevent or reverse significant hearing loss.
At what age can children get ENT surgery? +
ENT surgery in children is performed at any age when medically indicated. Adenotonsillectomy is common in children as young as 2–3 years with recurrent infections or airway obstruction. Our pediatric ENT surgeon uses age-appropriate, gentle techniques.
